The level of the item can be seen by pressing the ALT key on your PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the complete description of the item, as well as its value. It can also be found by hovering over an item using the mouse cursor and typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are many theories about the method by which the level of an item is calculated. One theory is that the level is a number that comes from a formula that determines the value of an item's stats are worth. It takes into consideration that different advantages are valued differently and that gems in the sockets increase the value of the item. This can lead to an item's ilvl which is calculated and is typically very close to Blizzards actual level of the item.

However, this is not the only factor that can affect an item's ilvl because the level of the region the item is dropped into can change the value of its stats, for example by adding an amount to its crit rating or haste rating. Items that drop in higher-level situations will have higher ilvl.

Item Stats

Item stats can make or break an item for players. The game uses a variety of them in different ways to encourage players to play with a variety of weapons, and also to stop one weapon from being "the Best item upgrade." The stats of a base weapon are enhanced by the weapon's stat mods, which are themselves increased by the player's skill.

Upgrades to the item add by boosting certain stats on the item. The rarity of an item determines its cost of upgrading. For instance, a gray or white item will only be upgraded once, whereas an item with rare tiers will be upgraded several times, at higher costs.

Players can upgrade an item by a specific stat, or reroll attaches. The stat ranges are determined by the item's level. However, all items will have at least one stat in the same range, unless it's a unique item or the item is a God Roll from a raid boss.

Another thing that could change is the possibility of upgrading equipment without having to reroll the attaches, or select which stats to boost. Similar to base equipment, it must be done per item, and the interface for item comparison will not show all possible stats at once.

Item Luck

The Luck stat for a player adds up to increase the chances of item discoveries and the properties that are spawned from loot drops and the intensity of those properties. It does not, however, directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player the chance to upgrade their equipment earlier in the game. This is particularly useful in the early game, since players tend to prioritize the scaling of weapons and defenses over raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chance of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith’s overall upgrade chances, which increase with each level of the item. It is also possible to be enhanced by using anti-materials such as a Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, armor, and shields can be made or spawn by using the Luck property, which has the default value of 40. These items can be improved with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) to add another 40 luck or to boost the luck of the item to 140.

Moreover some items, like the Hollow weapon, which is infused with Hollow can be used to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items can be found in the shop or created using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items can be a costly process and not every upgrade will be successful. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chance of success of an upgrade or to prevent players from losing their items if it fails.

The rate of success of an upgrade is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of successfully upgrading the item and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations to how much success rates can be increased and the chance of an upgrade failing cannot exceed 100%..

The performance of an can be affected by the luck of the item. Each item has an initial success rate of 25% and every item with Luck increases that chance by an additional five percent.

Note that upgrades to items are rendered above the items in the inventory, so enchantment glint and other effects may be masked by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
