Upgrades give you an increase in certain statistics. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item upgrader mod by 3. A random additional substat is also added to every upgrade.

The more modernized gear generally has a higher trade value regardless of whether it has low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or very high stat variance (like Eth titan weapons). Upgrades are not as important for those with lower requirements due to the need to roll an exact version.

Upgrades are items which can be used to upgrade weapons and tools, armor and other items. They can be bought by players through NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for various currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be applied to any weapon, tool, or armor. The button will show the preview of an item's next level of upgrade, in the event that there are enough materials.

Upgrade costs vary depending on the slot for the item and the current level of the item. For example weapons are more expensive than gloves, bracers or bracers. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with certain upgrades having a discount to lower the cost of Flightstones or crests used. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain level, it can be degraded and returned to the upgrader for a lower amount of the two currency types.

When a piece of equipment reaches the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer), it no longer requires Flightstones. This change is intended to allow players to get their gear up to the highest level possible for all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another significant modification is that crests have one usage, so it's important to use them wisely. It's Best item upgrade to use your Whelpling-rank crests on the highest-quality gear that you can find, and save Drake and Wyrm Crests to be used for the next set of upgrades. This is particularly true for items like trinkets and rings that occupy multiple slots on the character, which can only be eligible to avail the discount for all accounts when all of the slots are filled with top-quality gear.
