1. Roomba Q5 Pro
The Q5 Pro, and its more expensive sibling, the Q7 Max Series are among the most powerful robotic vacuums we have examined. They are equipped with top-of-the-line motors which can generate up to 5,500 Pascals of suction force. And, like other premium iRobot models (including the top pick) they employ smart mapping technology to design detailed floor plans that avoid common obstacles like cords and furniture legs. The robots also have Carpet Boost, a feature that boosts its power when it detects dirt on the carpet.
The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored extremely well in our tests on bare floors, and they are particularly adept in removing dog hair. There are some issues however, which hinder them from being our first option. One of the weaknesses of the Q5 is that its navigation system does not feature AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's also prone to get stuck on socks and shoes and could not navigate rooms with lots of people efficiently during our tests. It doesn't also come with a camera to look around corners.
Still, it's very good to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on a Roomba from iRobot and have a bare-floored home or office. It's also very quiet and can be used while you're at work, or school. The only thing it doesn't have that you don't get in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes that don't adhere well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 does have a self-emptying dock, though. And, if you have to, you can swap the mopping pad to a dry one in minutes.
2. IRobot Roomba X30
The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact sleek and stylish vacuum cleaner that also has the ability to mop floors. Its quick navigation and smart cleaning maps make it easy to clean and effective at taking on larger particles, such as pet hair. It also has an impressive suction system and a self-emptying bin. You can tell the X30 Ultra to remove its mop and extend them when it's in a room with carpet, which helps prevent cross-contamination. The flex arm can be used to reach under furniture with low levels and along baseboards. It doesn't offer the same level of washboard performance as our other Editors' Choice picks, the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo N8 Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.
During tests, X30 Ultra was the most efficient robot vacuum with mop vacuum/mop which could sweep the entire house, with 66 per cent of its battery remaining. It also did a good job cleaning a range of floors and rooms that had various flooring types, such as certain area carpets. Its obstacle detection was top-of-the-line, and it nimbly avoided fake dog socks, turds and cables.
It's more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but it has superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empties into the base. It also supports voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can even clean the floor after it vacuums it, something we've not seen on other robot vacuum/mop combinations.
3. Roomba X40 from iRobot
With an elegant circular design that looks more like a normal Roomba than the competition's compact models This robot vacuum and mop combo is among the most attractive looking models in our reviews. The latest flagship model from iRobot is also the most intelligent. It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that scored a perfect 10 in our testing, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured lighting system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and it boasts the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.
As with other iRobot models, the X40 is easy to use, offering an easy mobile app interface, and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. The only issue is that it's still quite loud, which can be a problem if you run it in the morning before work, or at night when you try to fall asleep.
It's also a bit costly, but not as much as the Ecovacs S8 MaxV Ultra or Roborock S8 Omni, which are both equally powerful and more attractive. This is a two-in-one vacuum that's very capable however, it's more expensive and create more noise.
4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra
The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the line robot mop and vacuum. It comes with a variety of advanced features that make you forget about your chores. It also has a front-mounted camera to detect hazards in real-time however, it wasn't 100% foolproof during our tests and was occasionally confused by power cords or other obstructions.
The vacuum cleaner has the capacity to suction up to 7,000 Pascals which is more than sufficient to do the job. It also has an attribute called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house based on how dirty these areas tend to be.
For larger houses it's worth looking for models with spot or zone cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot hoover and mop to clean one particular area of your home via the app or voice commands. A stairway mode is beneficial if you have large furniture. For families with busy schedules, a recharge feature and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to pick up where it left off could be very useful.
iRobot RX3
The RX3 is a cleaner with more intelligence than you might think from its price. It is a good vacuum cleaner, picking up 55% debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with only one pad and a rotating motion that cleans better that most of the robot mop cleaners that we've tested. It's self-sufficient too, with a fully-featured app as well as a self-emptying, washable base.
The well-designed iRobot application guides you through a mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, or to set up the spot-cleaning. You can also use it to rank your most filthy areas to improve performance. The app also gives access to a variety of features like seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.
Its shape is more rectangular than other robot vacuums, meaning it can reach corners and underneath furniture better. It features a powerful 8,000 Pascal suction, as well as sophisticated combs that remove pet hair. It also has the ability to set up a spot clean that scours a specific area.
The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker more affordable alternative to iRobot Roomba. It has a more attractive design, similar to Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are designed like cute little eyes. It is excellent at vacuuming, however it is more likely to be caught in low thresholds. It is also louder than other top robot vacuums we've test. It also comes with an app that is less intuitive and a small base station that can't double as a bin for emptying.
