Upgrades to gear increase its base stats, and sometimes boosts its extras. The value of these upgrades is determined by their tiers, requirements, and the amount of random augmentations that are applied.
The most powerful racial Shield Razortail, for example, is often upgraded to increase its lightning absorption capability in PvP, and/or to add additional defenses to missile-based designs in the PvM. This makes it more marketable than the perfect non-upgraded version.
Reroll Tokens
Reroll tokens can be used to reroll a purchased item like an armor, weapon, or ring. This replaces the item with another item of the same type, but with different benefits. Reroll tokens are an efficient method of upgrading equipment. However, they don't keep the level of the original item and any resources that are wasted aren't refunded.
The survivors can acquire reroll tokens by a variety of means, including from the Mistery Box or as rare drops from skulled creatures. They are also available in crates and chests or buy them from the store for $150 each. Reroll tokens can be used to change the attributes of the equipment for example, increasing its damage or giving it a new stat.

Once the requirements are met, the player can then click the upgrade button to apply the Growth Stones to the item. This will raise the item's level by a specific percentage. The upgrade to the helm "Foundation of the Sun" For instance, increases defense base and provides an additional 20 percent chance of blocking. The dps "Wildfire" on the other hand increases damage from weapons.
Certain items benefit from upgrading less because of their improved stats, but because it allows players to gain the most value out of a perfect roll on the item. For example, a perfect-rolled 200/6 504 armor set piece is highly valued in the melee PvP community and could be worth 20-50x more than the non-upp'd version.
The game will highlight the requirements when you select the upgrade component that is incorporated into the item. These include the type of item (either Weapon or Armor) and the tier of that item and the upgrade Token required, as well as the amount of progress needed to complete the upgrade.
The game will put an item in your inventory once you've met the requirements for an upgrade. The progress bar will then update to show you how close you are towards completing the upgrade. You can also check the status of an upgrade by going to any NPC that upgrades items.
