Upgrades increase the value of certain numeric stats on weapons, armor and rings. Upgrades can also boost bonuses like Crit chance and damage from PvE.

For instance, a weapon with the upgrade template ending in % will gain an attack damage of 3% each time it is upgraded (relative to its previous value).

Item upgrading costs crests and the item's current level. The cost increases with item's level.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be inserted into armor, weapons, and trinkets to give an extra stat boost or effect when they're used. They can be acquired through crafting, buying from vendors, trading or looting. Certain upgrades have unique cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into equipment with a slot for them; the item must be at a minimum upgraded to blue level to allow a component to be applied. Unlike other mods, upgrade components can only be used one time; they cannot be applied multiple times or replaced by new upgrades. Infusions and Enrichments are a kind of upgrade component that is used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and ascending equipment, as in some items that aren't ascended. Infusions and enrichments can be obtained by salvaging ascended equipment or completing a mission in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade may have a prefix or suffix changing the name of the equipment to the upgrade (for examplefor example 'Canthan Armor Insignia" becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost the Mark Level or Rarity of an item, allowing players to create stronger versions using fewer Upgrade crystals than they require to achieve the same level using standard methods.

A boost upgrade can alter the attack or defense attributes of a weapon or armor. These upgrades can be made from the Portative Forging Station once the player completes the cutscene and defeats the Crazed mechanic. They can be dropped by enemies while upgrading other gear, or by buying them from the cash store for 500 upgrade crystals each.

Each upgrade increases the chance that a better-quality version of an item will be dropped at the next reset. This gives the player some incentive to continue upgrading their gear even if they're uncertain of the extent to which it will improve after a future reset.

If a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process could be costly and there is a significant chance that the item could become obsolete or even break when it fails; a unsuccessful upgrade could cause the destruction of Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder, as well as the upgraded item. This is reduced by the availability of cash shop items that double or even eliminate chances of failure, and a few upgrades that give an additional benefit when they are inserted into an item.

Glyphs

Glyphs are upgrade elements that can be placed in special sockets on the Paragon Board. Glyphs increase the effectiveness of all nodes in a radius around them, including pre-existing affixes on equipment. Glyphs are upgraded in many ways. We recommend upgrading them as fast as possible to level 15.

In the final game, you will often find that the most effective way to upgrade your gear is to place Glyphs. They are the only upgrade components that can be upgraded straight to level 15 and offer significant boosts to your power and radius on the Paragon Board, enabling you to climb higher nodes more quickly.

Glyphs, which is the only upgrade item component which can be removed without restriction and replaced with no restrictions, are the most common. The only exception is legendary equipment that requires the use of a Black Lion Salvage Kit to salvage and re-place.

Each Glyph has a particular range of values it can improve a statistic by. The value is shown when you choose the Glyph in your inventory. You can replace it with an Glyph that is the same or higher rank to increase the value of the Glyph.

You can find Glyphs in the Black Lion Trading Post, as part of a Gem Store purchase or bundle with certain tools for gathering unlimited use as well as through Faction Crypt raids. Each Faction Crypt could drop one of these Glyphs. There are also some rare glyphs you can find in any of the Faction Crypts.

Once you have gotten the desired Glyphs you'll need them to be placed on your equipment. Each Glyph unlocks a unique bonus that will boost the stats of a particular set of nodes in a radius surrounding the Glyph. Depending on the Glyph it could be +40 to one of your primary stats, or +25 to two of your secondary stats.

The use of the Glyph can boost all nodes connected to it, and it is recommended to position your Glyphs close to key nodes on the Graph to maximise the impact. Druids for instance should put their Glyphs close to their primary damage nodes. They might be able to place them near their most critical damage nodes.

Leveling

The item upgrading system allows players to increase the stats of specific items by putting upgraded components inside them. This is commonly known as "upping". Each upgradeable item has a level which determines the final statistics. Upgraded items can be leveled up to a maximum level of 385. Each item level requires various components, and upgrade costs increase with each level.

Certain upgrades require a specific ingredient to activate. This ingredient is obtained from the completion of Upgrade Recipes. These recipes are available in the upgrade tab of a crafting table, or obtained from NPCs. Each completed Upgrade Recipe earns several Technology Points. These points can be used to level up the item. Once enough points have been earned, the upgrade can be claimed and the additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When a player improves a piece of equipment the original item will be replaced by a new item. This means that the same armor piece will get a weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item comes with its own set of bonuses. This can be a downside, as the item can increase in price even if you do not need it.

If the player has enough tokens they can roll the upgrade of their item. This will cause the item to be exchanged for a brand new one, with the level 1 base, and a different set of extra bonuses. This can be useful for some items, but it shouldn't be repeated often, as it can use up a lot of resources.

Certain upgrades can be rerolled many times to increase their value, giving players the ability to alter their gear. A good example of this is Dolphin's Gift, which gives an advantage when a player repeatedly enters and exits water (or does not swim as a dolphin). This item can be upgraded many times and increases the maximum roll each time by 10 increments. This item is extremely valuable in PvP. A properly rolled version could be worth up to 50x the value of the non-upgraded version.

Requirements

Item upgrading allows players to boost the level of their available equipment - weapons, armor, and trinkets that are above ilvl 385 by presenting the appropriate currency and items to an item upgrader NPC. Upgrading armor set pieces will also increase the defense base of the piece, whereas upgrading weapons will increase the base damage and the strength and dexterity required to meet the upgraded equipment's requirements.

Each item can be upgraded up to five times, with the exception for hero equipment, which can be upgraded eight times. Each each time you upgrade an item it is given a chance to fail--the failure rate increases the farther you go over the maximum number of upgrades. Failures can result in the item reverting to its original state, which will force the user to spend more materials than they would have to had they stopped upgrading at the highest number of upgrades.

If an item isn't upgraded the experience bar on its growth bar will be reset to zero. The item will also lose any bonuses it earned, such as crit chance damage to attack, additional effects (such as a higher healing rate over time or the speed of reloading). However, the player may still continue to use the weapon or armor after the failure.

When an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied from lowest to highest. This means that, when a weapon gains an increase in the chance of crit, the increase is applied prior to any increase in attack damage. A new attribute called Slots is now added to the item definition and the value is calculated each time an upgrade is made.

The amount of resources needed to upgrade an item is determined on the rarity rating and number of upgrade slots. The upgrade cost for non-premium items is equal to the base value of the upgrade--for instance, a standard equipment item might have 5 upgrades with a cost of 25,600 Technology Points and 4x Quality Improvement Chance. Hero grade items will come with a much lower cost for each additional upgrade.

Premium items have different requirements for upgrading in comparison to standard equipment. For instance, they may require fewer sowels, but more minerals and erons. Players will still have to carry every piece of gear they wish to upgrade to NPC [Armor] Boboko located in Central Flarine. Each upgrade of equipment requires different amounts of ingredients for upgrading, in addition to the cost mentioned above.
