Lolita's Personality
Macaws are a wonderful companion bird. They are friendly and intelligent. They thrive in well-rounded families. They can easily become bored and find ways to entertain themselves even if their owners aren't engaging with them enough often. If they aren't socialized properly, macaws can become aggressive and may even bite. It is crucial to establish clear boundaries so the macaw does not feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are lively birds that love to play, climb and interact. They need to spend at least 2 to 3 hours every day outside for mental stimulation and physical exercise. They love playing games while listening to music, and learning tricks. They also enjoy going to parks and playgrounds, hiking and visiting local bars and restaurants. They are not only a great pet but also a wonderful companion for children.
Despite their adoring nature however, these birds can be loud and can be a distraction to those living close by. They can emit ear-splitting calls and screeches which can be a nuisance for those who live in condos or apartments.
Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, meaning males and females are difficult to distinguish. Due to this, the only way to reliably determine sex is via DNA testing. Once the birds' sex is determined and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases, and tricks. This can be a long process, and the pet's owner has to be patient and recognize that this is a tough task. Positive reinforcement can speed up the process and help to correct any behavior issues.
Lolita's care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to retire from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita blue & gold macaw might have a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to go back to the ocean.
The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinary doctor and continue to put her in danger. They sabotage her health by making her perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. They also put her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.
Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as a relative in a plan to eventually transport her to the open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen on the west coast of Washington where she could live for the rest of her days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild killer whales are highly social animals who bond with family members until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Activists from across the country have demanded Lolita's release from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. These activists include Ric O'Barry, who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

The Miami Seaquarium has released a series of updates about Lolita's health and condition, but questions remain. Akromas and others who have been trained or supervised Lolita's health over time are concerned about her diet. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she is eating 115 pounds of salmon, capelin, herring, and squid per day.
The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they offer their killer whales, particularly Lolita. The orca, who was 57 years old, was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and while the species is endangered in the wild, she lives in an aquarium that some consider too small for her.
Lolita blue & gold macaw's Health
Lolita is beautiful, however her health continues to decline. She has been a source of concern for animal welfare organizations who want to see her returned into the wild. Lolita who has been living at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970, has been a tourist attraction for a long time. She has been battling chronic illnesses and a crippling disease that has left her in a vulnerable condition.
The Dolphin Company, which now is the owner of the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any information regarding the condition of Lolita. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has published monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. These updates reveal that Toki is ageing rapidly and her health is declining.
It is not clear what health issues are affecting the orca, as her captor isn't obliged to disclose the information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease often plays an important factor in the death of captive orcas.
Despite the ongoing health concerns of Lolita, many people believe that she could be closer than ever to an unspoiled life. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has made it clear that he will work to relocate the whale out of her tank into her home waters in the Pacific.
After years of pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary on the ocean and she will be able to swim deep in the water and possibly even be being reunited with her mother orca. Sadly the plans came too late for the beloved whale, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a renal issue.
