Item upgrading is a key component to maximizing your gearing potential. It allows you to add bonus stats and bonuses in addition to your base level item's value.

Upgrade components
The method of upgrading weapons, armor, and other gear in Cyberpunk 2077 has been revamped as part of the 2.0 update. The items that can be upgraded include weapons and armor, a few trinkets, and gathering tools. Upgrade slots can be filled on each item, granting bonus effects or attributes when the equipment is utilized. These upgrades are available through crafting, purchased from a vendor, or taken from the loot.
There are two types of upgrade components that are universal upgrades and gems. Universal upgrades which are like gemstones, can be put in any type of equipment and provide a smaller bonus than other types of upgrade components. These are easy to obtain by dropping them by enemies and looted all over the world. Gems however are gained by disassembling items or by completing certain tasks.
Upgrades can be taken out and replaced with new ones in the weapon's slot. However, this will destroy any previous upgrades. Other upgrades, with the exception for glyphs that are placed in gathering tools, cannot be removed from an item after they are placed. Infusions can be put into legendary and advanced equipment. Enrichments can only be recovered by using a high-end salvaging kit or upgrade extractor.
Recycled items
In the two recent world wars, the scarcity of natural resources pushed the world to adopt recycling. Recycling items like aluminum or plastic, as well as paper is a common practice.
