Armor

There are a few different kinds of armor upgrades that are that are available in the game and they all have distinct effects. For instance, certain upgrades give the armor a certain amount of additional health points, while others make it lighter and stronger. The name of the armor upgrade will tell you the kind of upgrade an item can receive, as shown below.

Some upgrades are magical or a combination of technology and magic which is shown by an "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Additionally, some upgrades require a charge to use, which are identified by an "Charges" entry in the table below. The charges for these upgrades are updated daily or never expire, dependent on the upgrade.

It is not recommended to upgrade armor beyond +9. The added defense generally isn't worth the weight and power cost of the upgrades.

Weapons

The Jeweler can craft all tiers of gems, except for the rare and legendary ones which require an appropriate level to obtain. Like other upgrade components jewels can be swapped out with a jewel of the same type without damaging the original one. However it is only possible to replace the jewels in a piece of equipment once.

It is common to use more jewelry for aesthetic reasons. The jewels can also enhance performance and make an outer layer that is more durable than steel so that repeated friction from pivots do not damage them.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs to enhance the appearance of your shields and weapons. These provide a small bonus and are able to be swapped easily, but are not guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs are upgradeable, as jewelry, by visiting the Jeweler for gold, and also a scattered Crystal. Glyphs can also be taken out, which returns them to the inventory. Other upgrade components like traits or aegis cannot be exchanged, and can only be found through an upgrade extractor or salvaging using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage.

Trinkets

Trinkets are small pieces of equipment that provide an array of tiny but valuable benefits to your hero. You can find them in the start-up area as loot or as personal story rewards. They are also available through vendors and after doing road interaction. They can also be made by jewelers, and found or purchased on the Trading Post.

The first trinkets a player can unlock is the cloak, which grants a small, but valuable boost in speed of movement and evasion. After that, they'll be able to get amulets, rings, and necklaces in a similar fashion to how the player obtains armor and weapons. Each piece of equipment has an upgrade slot that is either universal or jewel. This is true especially if you want to upgrade multiple stats on an item Level Upgrade. It is more beneficial to upgrade a single important stat instead of two subpar ones.

Jungle players usually upgrade their yellow trinkets to a red one at the start of the game. Mid and top players however, will choose a green or a pink ward, depending on the game's matchup. These choices will have a significant impact on the hero's ability to control his map.
