Upgrades can boost the value of weapons, armors and rings. Upgrades also increase bonuses such as crit chance and PvE Damage.

If the template for upgrading a weapon is in %, the weapon will increase 3percent of its previous damage for every time it is upgraded.

Item upgrading costs crests and the item's current level. The cost increases as the level of the item increases.

Components

Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armor and trinkets to give them a boost in stats or add a bonus effect. These can be obtained by making crafts, buying from vendors or trading with other players or looting. Some upgrades also have specific cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can only be used on equipment that has a slot. The item must be at least upgraded to blue level before the component can be used. Upgrade components, unlike other mods can only be applied only once. They cannot be replaced or applied multiple times. Infusions and enrichments are a specific kind of upgrade component that is used for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment, as well as some of the non-ascended back items. Infusions and Enrichments can be obtained by salvaging ascended equipment or completing a quest in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix may be added to an upgrade, which alters the name of the item it is applied to (for example 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' is changed to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades can increase the Mark Level or Rarity of an item, allowing players to create stronger versions using less Upgrade crystals than they would require to achieve the same level using normal methods.

A 'boost upgrade' can alter the attack or defense properties of a weapon, or armor. These upgrades are available to be made from the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene and defeats the Crazed Mechanical. They can be dropped by enemies while upgrading other gear, or by purchasing them from the cash store for 500 upgrade crystals each.

Each upgrade item increases the probability that a higher-tier version of an item will be available during the next reset. This gives the player an incentive to continue upgrading their gear even if they're uncertain of how much it will increase after a future reset.

Whether a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process may be expensive, and there is a substantial risk that the item upgrades may become obsolete or even break when it fails. A failed upgrade will cause the destruction of Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder as well as the upgraded item. This is mitigated by the availability of cash shop items to double or even eliminate the chance of failure, as well as a few upgrades that give an additional benefit when they are inserted into an item.

Glyphs

Glyphs can be used to improve the Paragon Board by placing them in sockets with special functions. Glyphs boost the power of all nodes in their radius as well as existing affixes on equipment. Glyphs are upgraded in many ways, and we recommend upgrading them to 15 levels as soon as possible.

The value of each Glyph is displayed when you select it in your inventory. You can choose to replace it with a different Glyph with the same rank or higher rank, which will increase the overall value of the glyph.

There are Glyphs in the Black Lion Trading Post, as part of a Gem Store purchase or bundle with certain tools for gathering unlimited use, and through Faction Crypt raids. Each Faction Crypt has the chance of dropping one of the numerous Glyphs, and there are also a few rare glyphs that can be found in the form of drops from any of the four Faction Crypts.

Once you have gotten the desired Glyphs you will require them to be placed on your gear. Each Glyph unlocks a special bonus that boosts the stats of a specific set of nodes within a radius around the Glyph. Based on the Glyph, this will either be +40 to one of your primary stats, or +25 to two of your secondary stats.

Using the Glyph will boost all the nodes connected to it, and you should try to place your Glyphs close to key nodes on the Graph to maximise the impact. Druids for instance should position their Glyphs close to their primary damage nodes. They may also consider placing them near their critical damage nodes.

Leveling

The item upgrading system allows players to improve the effectiveness of certain items by placing upgraded components inside them. This is often referred to as "upping". Each upgradeable item is assigned a level that determines the final statistics. Upgraded items are able to be leveled until they reach a maximum level of 385 ilvl. Each level of item requires various components, and upgrade costs increase with each level.

Some upgrades require a special ingredient to activate. This ingredient can be obtained by making Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be bought from NPCs, or on the upgrade tab of crafting tables. Each Upgrade Recipe that is completed yields a certain number of Technology points. These points can be used to level the item. Once enough are earned, the upgrade can be claimed and the additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When the player upgrade a piece of equipment it is replaced by an item that is new. The same armor will receive an weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item will have its own set bonus. This could be a drawback because it can cause the item to become more expensive if you don't need it.

If the player has enough tokens, they can roll the upgrade of their item. This causes the item to be exchanged for a brand new one, which will have an initial level and a completely different set of bonus bonuses. This can be useful, but shouldn't be done often as it can be a waste of resources.

Certain upgrades can be rerolled many times which increases their value and allowing the player to customize their gear. A good example of this is Dolphin's Gift, which gives an advantage when a player repeatedly enters and leaves the water (or does not swim as dolphins). It can be upgraded multiple times, each time raising the maximum roll by 10 points. This item is extremely useful in PvP battles, since an item that is properly rolled it can be worth between 20 and 50 times its value without being upgraded.

Requirements

Item upgrading allows players to increase the level of their equippable gear--armor, weapons and trinkets that are above ilvl 385 by providing the appropriate items and currency to an item upgrader NPC. Upgrades to armor set pieces increase its base defense, while upgrades to weapon items increase their base damage and also increase their strength and dexterity.
