World of Warcraft Item Upgrades

Upgrades to an item are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type it can increase an item's Mark Level or Rarity, and also boost other stats.

Upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a specified number of Flightstones and Crests and each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a specific amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's basic stats increase when it is upgraded. The value is the sum of all of its upgraded advantages (attack, magic attack and defense). Upgrading items can be expensive, depending on the upgrader you choose and what kind of upgrade you decide to do. This is due to the sheer number of perks that need to be modified to upgrade an item.

The level of an item is a widely used measure of power, and can be found on all item tooltips. It is also used to limit how much PvP gear players can use as PvP is restricted at a lower level. Players can see their average level of item on their character sheet.

When deciding whether to purchase or sell gear, players can compare the item level. It's a measure of the damage and quality. Comparing items from a vendor's stock can be done using the level of the item.

On PC, you can view the item upgrade level by pressing ALT or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the item's full description, including ilvl. You can also find it by hovering over an item and typing in /itemlevel chat.

There are a few theories on how the item level calculation is done. One theory is that the item level is a number derived from a formula that calculates how much an item upgrader mod's stats are worth. It takes into consideration the fact that various perks have different value and sockets have gems that increase the overall value of the item. This process could result in a calculated value for the item's ilvl which is usually close to Blizzard's actual level of the item.

However, this is not the only factor that affects an item's ilvl, because the level of the region the item dropped in can change the value of its stats, for instance by adding an additional level to its crit rating or haste rating. Items that drop in higher-level instances will have higher ilvl.

Item Stats

The stats of an item are a major element in what makes or breaks an item for players. The game utilizes them in various ways to encourage players to not limit themselves to a single weapon and to encourage players to experiment with other weapons. The stat mods on a weapon boost the base stats. These stat mods are then enhanced by the player's level.

The upgrades to an item can increase the stats of an item. The rarity of an item determines its cost of upgrading. A grey or white item, for example, will only be upgraded one time, while an item with rare tiers may be upgraded multiple times with more expensive costs.

Affixes are another way to change an item's stats. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player and come in a variety of sizes and shapes. The affixes can be used to give items extra damage or special capabilities (such as reviving dead or reducing cooling downs) or to make them unique by adding a name.

All affixes can be re-rolled at the moment by selecting them in the upgrade window pressing the green button. This will cost a specific amount in gold and other items. These can be used as upgrade gauges just like the other rerolling methods.

Players can upgrade an item upgrader kit with a specific stat or reroll the affixes. The range of stats determined by the item's level. However each item will contain at least one stat in the range, unless they are an exclusive item or an item that has a God Roll from a boss in a raid.

This is another aspect that can be modified by adding an option to upgrade the equipment without having to reroll the affixes or deciding which stats to boost. Like base equipment, it will have to be done per item and the interface for item comparison wouldn't display all possible stats at once.

Item Luck

A player's Luck stat stacks up to increase the chances of finding items and the properties that are spawned from loot drops, and the intensity of those properties. It does not, however, directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player the chance to upgrade item equipment earlier in the game. This is especially useful for early game runs, since players tend to prioritize the scaling of weapons and defenses over raw damage gains.

Luck can also boost the chances of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading that increases with each level of the item and can be further enhanced by using an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, shields, and armor can be made or spawn using the Luck property, which has the default value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the item's material type) to grant a further +40 Luck, or to increase the luck of an item, up to 140.

Certain items, like the Hollow-infused weapon can also be outfitted to increase the damage of any ability that deals damage by five percent. These items can be found in the shops or made using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades work. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chance of success of an upgrade or to prevent players from losing their item in the event that it is not successful.

When you upgrade an item, the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successfully upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special materials. The probability of success can only be increased as much, and the chance that an upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%.

The Luck of an item can also influence the effectiveness of an upgrade. Each item has an average success rate of 25% and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by an additional five percent.

Note that upgrades to items are rendered above the items in the inventory therefore enchantment glints and other effects could be obscured by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
