Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. They also increase bonuses, such as PvE damage and crit chance.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be put into weapons, armor, and trinkets to provide a stat bonus or extra effect while they're in use. These can be obtained by crafting, purchasing from vendors, trading with other players or looting. Certain upgrades come with special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components are only available to equipment with a slot. The item upgrader kit must be upgraded to blue level before a component can be applied. upgrade item components, unlike other mods, can only be applied once. They cannot be replaced or applied several times. Infusions and enrichments are a specific kind of upgrade component used for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment and some of the back items that are not ascending. Infusions and enrichments are recovered by salvaging ascended gear or completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

A suffix or prefix can be added to an upgrade, thereby changing the name of the item it's used on (for example 'Canthan Armor Insignia',' changes to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, which allows players to create stronger versions of that equipment with the smallest amount of Upgrade Crystals than are required to reach the same level of upgrade using normal methods.

A boost upgrade can change the attack or defense attributes of a weapon, or armor. Once the player has completed the cutscene and defeated the Crazed Mechanist the upgrades can be made at the Portative Forging Station. They can also be dropped by enemies while upgrading other gear or buying them from the cash shop for 500 upgrade crystals each.

The player is able to have a maximum of five boost upgrades at one time; each upgrade increases the likelihood that a higher-tier version of the item will be available in the next reset. These recipes can be purchased from NPCs or found on the upgrade tab in crafting tables. Each Upgrade Recipe that is completed will result in a certain amount of Technology points. These points can be used to level the item, and once enough points have been earned, the upgrade will be claimed and the additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When an individual player upgrades the equipment they have, the base item will be replaced with an item that is new. The same armor will receive the form of a weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item will also have its own set bonus. This could be a disadvantage, as the item can be more expensive even if you don't require it.

The failure rate increases as you go over the maximum number. Failures will result in the item reverting to its initial state, requiring the player to pay more for materials than they would had they stopped upgrading at the highest number of upgrades.

If an item does not upgrade, the amount of accumulated experience in its growth bar is reset to zero. The item will also lose any bonuses it gained like chances to be crit attack damage, other effects (such as increased heal over time or the speed of reloading). The player is able to use their weapon or armor even after the failure.

If an item is upgraded the upgrades are applied from the lowest to the highest.
